Description

The tutorial will introduce the basics of fuzzy logic for data analysis. Fuzzy Logic can be used to model and deal with imprecise information, such as inexact measurements or available expert knowledge in the form of verbal descriptions. We will first introduce the concepts of fuzzy sets, degrees of membership and fuzzy set operators. After discussions on fuzzy numbers and arithmetic operations using them, the focus will shift to fuzzy rules and how such systems of rules can be derived from available data.

Its hard for mac/linux users which don't have windows media player available. Do I have to buy windows now to watch?

It's ironical in a way. Exchange Ideas and Share Knowledge...but only if you run windows.

People complaining about free lectures, about OpenCourseWare Courses... The cam is not moving the way I would like it... the guy talks so fast, so slow, it's so easy, so hard to follow... please!!! Just Wake up!!!
10 years ago this kind of things were just impossible, and now you have it just by a 10 secconds' search at google...
If you want a better quality course just go and pay for it...
I think this is great, and this lecture in particular is so clear... I'm going to find the way to download it... Thank you everyone who made it possible!!!

Comment35 Modi Salah, June 7, 2009 at 1:45 a.m.:

i'm glad that i came a cross this lecture .... i've been suffering for a while now :)

loads of thanx for everyone made it possibile for us as to watch and learn from this lecture and keep up the good work

Comment36 John Kelly, July 1, 2009 at 10:54 p.m.:

I see many references asking if videos can be downloaded, is this possible ?

Comment37 vimala, July 14, 2009 at 3:20 p.m.:

during the lectures at some instances the cameraman instead of focussing on the board he tried to focus on the teacher.so we were unable to see where the teacher was focussing on the board

Comment38 A.Jafarian, July 15, 2009 at 5:22 a.m.:

I really enjoyed every section of this video lecture.
Thank you Mr Michael Berthold.

it is very nice lecture and i would like to download this lecture for study please give permission thanks

Comment44 Rupen, September 25, 2009 at 3:12 a.m.:

Well, the lecture looks good, however, I have not understood the concepts of these neural networks and fuzzy logic on data analysis area. If we use the same data to model itself, then the question is what we are actually modeling - these simply turn out to be nothing but simply some form of advanced curve fitting tools. The most important feature would be if these tools can give us satisfactory modeling of some variables such as heat transfer coeffecient that cannot be measured easily from some other easily measurable variables, then only it makes sense. If it is the case of estimation and cross validation where the estimation depends on measured quantities, then modeling can be easily achieved such as using some dimensionless physical numbers and why we need the fuzzy logic or neural network in such cases, it is not clear yet.

Comment50 Kaoutar, February 24, 2010 at 1:23 p.m.:

First of all, nice lectures thanks for establishing this website and videolectures.
I am at the moment working on my MA thesis and I use the fuzzy-set/Qualitative Comparative Analysis (of Prof. Charles C. Ragin). In Ragin's book ‘Fuzzy-Set Social Science’ (2000) he discusses a number of types of fuzzy sets. I would like to know if somebody who also used this method would know whether it is possible to use different types of fuzzy-set to translate the conditions to fuzzy membership scores. For example to value condition A use a three value fuzzy-set and for condition B a seven value fuzzy-set.

Hope someone could give me an answer.

Kind regards

Comment51 Kaoutar, February 24, 2010 at 1:55 p.m.:

I have got my answer on my question :). I got a reply from a PhD student and he told me it's possible to use different coding for fuzzy-sets. As long as you "calibrate" your variables (i.e. transform your variables into fuzzy sets) in the good way, everything is possible. And fuzzy values can only correspond to ordered categories!

Try a free program called Streamtransport to download from jwplayer type flash videos over rtmp transport layer.

Comment61 Fuzzy Seeker, March 5, 2011 at 4:52 a.m.:

It would have been nice if the person who is doing the video focus on the slides that the lecturer is showing.

Coz we don't have any idea what he is pointing at, As the cameraman is showing only the lecturer most of the time.

Comment62 Aty, May 9, 2011 at 2:40 a.m.:

Thank u for the video But I think, it would be more useful if u show the slides.

Comment63 arman, December 2, 2011 at 11:25 a.m.:

Comment67 Karl, January 25, 2013 at 11:01 p.m.:

Thank you so much for this lecture! It's great!!!
In part 2 you said there are exponentially many rules in high dimensional space. The rules increase exponentially with granularity and geometrically with dimensions.
I really appreciate how understandable your lecture is! Thanks!
