Dr. Alan Hanjalic is an Associate Professor of Multimedia Technology and Head of the Multimedia Content Analysis research cluster at the Department of Mediamatics of the Delft University of Technology. He received his Ph.D. in 1999 from the Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, and his Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.) degree in 1995 from the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen, Germany, both in Electrical Engineering. He was a visiting scientist at Hewlett-Packard Labs in Palo Alto CA, USA, in 1998, a research fellow at British Telecom Labs, Ipswich, UK, in 2001, and a visiting scientist at Philips Research Labs at Briarcliff Manor NY, USA, in 2003, as well as at Microsoft Research Asia, Beijing, China, in 2005.

Research interests and expertise of Dr. Hanjalic are in the broad areas of multimedia signal processing, media informatics and multimedia information retrieval, with focus on multimedia content analysis for interactive content browsing and retrieval and on personalized and on-demand multimedia content delivery. In his areas of expertise Dr. Hanjalic authored and co-authored more than 70 publications, among which the books titled Image and Video Databases: Restoration, Watermarking and Retrieval (Elsevier, 2000) and Content-Based Analysis of Digital Video (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2004), and holds several US/EU patents obtained through collaboration with Philips and British Telecom.

Dr. Hanjalic is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, the Journal of Multimedia, the Advances in Multimedia and the Image and Vision Computing journal. He is also a Guest Editor of the International Journal of Image and Graphics (World Scientific, Singapore), Special Issue on Content-based Image and Video Retrieval, July 2001, a Guest Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, Special Issue on Integration of Content and Context for Multimedia Management, January 2009, a Guest Editor of the Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation, Special Issue on Emerging Techniques for Multimedia Content Sharing, Search and Uniderstanding, February 2009, the Lead Guest Editor of the EURASIP Journal on Image and Video Processing, Special Issue on Dependable Semantic Inference, May 2010, and the Chief Guest Editor of the Proceedings of the IEEE, Special Issue on Advances in Multimedia Information Retrieval, April 2008.

He has also served as Chair of the IS&T/SPIE Conference on Multimedia Content Analysis, Management and Retrieval 2006, Workshops Chair of the ACM Multimedia Conference 2006, General Co-Chair of the Asia-Pacific Workshop on Visual Information Processing 2007, Chair of the IS&T/SPIE Conference on Multimedia Content Access: Algorithms and Systems 2007, Area Chair of the Multimedia Modelling Conference 2007, Track Chair of the Pacific Rim Conference on Multimedia 2007, Area Chair of the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and EXPO 2007, Technical Program Co-Chair of the ACM Multimedia Conference 2007, Technical Program Co-Chair of the ACM CIVR 2008 conference, Tutorials Chair of the Visual Information Engineering Conference 2008, Track Co-Chair of the WWW 2008 conference, and the General Co-Chair of the 17th ACM Multimedia Conference, Beijing, PR China, 2009.

Dr. Hanjalic was a Keynote Speaker at the Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia, Hong-Kong, December 2007. He chaired the Best Paper Award Committee of the ACM Multimedia Conference 2007, and has served yearly as a Program Committee member in more than 20 international conferences and workshops, some of which are ACM Multimedia, ACM SIGIR, International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV), IEEE ICME, IEEE ICIP, IEEE ICASSP, ACM International Conference on Image and Video Retrieval (ACM CIVR), and IEEE Conference on Standardization & Innovation in Information Technology. Dr. Hanjalic served as an invited member in various panels, including those at the conferences like ACM Multimedia (2007) and ACM CIVR (2008), and was also invited to organize and chair a panel on future developments in the field of multimedia at the Picture Coding Symposium 2007.

Dr. Hanjalic was the initiator and main organizer of the Symposium on Multimedia Retrieval, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, January 2002, and of the Symposium Multimedia at your Fingertips, Delft, The Netherlands, November 2006, about the possibilities and bottlenecks for boosting the multimedia knowledge transfer in the Netherlands towards new products and services. He is a co-initiator and a member of the coordinating board of the EU FP7 Network of Excellence "Peer-to-Peer Tagged Media" (PetaMedia), 2008-2012. He is an advisor/reviewer of the Swiss National Science Fundation (SNSF), Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and Flemish Science Foundation (IWT) for project proposals in the areas of Multimedia and Information Technology and Systems. From 2002 to 2005 Dr. Hanjalic was the secretary of the IEEE Benelux Section.
