Description

I was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in July 1964. I received the Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering degree from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, in 1988, the Master's degree in Electrical and Computers Engineering from IST, Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 1991 and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Aveiro, in 1996.

Currently, I am an Associate Professor "com agregação" at the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics of the University of Aveiro, and a researcher at the Signal Processing Laboratory of the Institute of Electronics and Telematics Engineering of Aveiro - IEETA. I am also the current director of IEETA.

My main research activity is in the area of image coding, data compression and computational biology. I also have interests in other areas of research such as bioinformatics and image and video analysis.
