Description

The knowledge about the genetically modified organisms and their understanding is complex, since already the term »genetically modified« is not well defined and can be subjected to different interpretations. Besides, the term can relate to different organisms, from microorganisms and animals to plants. Newly introduced characteristics can be heterogeneous, thus the awareness of such properties, their advantages and disadvantages should be high. This article represents the current status of the genetically modified plants: their presence in the world, introduced characteristics, legislation framework before release to the market, traceability and coexistence of genetically modified, organic, and conventional agriculture.
