Description

Antibiotics are substances produced by microorganisms which use them to selectively kill or inhibit growth of other microorganisms. Since the discovery of penicillin in 1928, antibiotics are essential for treatment of bacterial infections. However, soon after the introduction of antibiotics into clinical practice bacterial resistances against these »magic drugs« emerged. Since 2000, the era of so called global public health crisis characterized by a worldwide escalation of antibiotic resistant bacteria, began. Although antibiotic resistance has been studied in clinical settings, little is known about the environmental role of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes. Insight into the origins, environmental reservoirs and movement of resistance genes from unmanaged ecosystems to human pathogenic bacteria may advance the efforts to combat antibiotic resistance.
