Well! I am not sure how deep understanding this professor has on carnatic music and the clture of India.
He is simply misguiding his audience.
1. Carnatica- Karnataka is not "south india" in most of south indian languages. Rather it is a state, where it took a great patronage under "sangeetha pithamaha" Purandara Daasa.
Also, regarding comments on the caste system, I think he is simply exaggerating things out of proportion. It is a pure white lie. Usually, audience are involved in listening to the music than looking and analyzing the people who enter the venue. In fact, many of the performers, artists themselves are from a backward caste. This Professor takes more time to deviously malign the people of India than teaching what music is about.

It is amusing to read this writer taking an exception for the observation made by this American professor. I find it fairly accurate observation with some inaccuracies in details.
The South Indian music is basically a brahmin culture and in particular of Iyers. It is laughable to say that low caste hindus are allowed to participate.
It is high time some body exposes the hipoacracey of Brahmins, who destroyed India over several thousand years with their discriminatory practices and getting all upset when somebody exposes them.
I feel there is some chance India may become a fair nation as I notice hoards of brahmins are leaving the country looking for a greener pasture elsewhere.

@rudraiah - I beg to differ - Muttuswami Dixitar composed songs (navagraha kritis) that captured the essence of some of the scriptures so that everyone can recite without restriction. I can give few other examples too - but these are considered the "jewels". There never was any restriction on who can listen to carnatic music. Please be relevant in your discussion as relevant to this video.

dear random theorist... i would like to know any musicians from backward cast... the only one i could find is great yesudas...but still he is from a different religion and i i dont know if he is from sub cast... i believe there is not any from sub cast who have progressed or allowed to progress up the ladder to perform in concerts.. thats a shame... but if you know any musician who have.. could you pls let me know... i would really appriciate ... i would love if carnatic music reach every one who love it. regardless cast backround... i am waiting for such a time... thank you

Ref Abhi: Don't get too hot under the collar, it is a fact until recently all Carnatic music concert were held within the confines of temples where backward communities were not allowed and of course forget the untouchables. It is amazing you Brahmins have no shame or regrets about your past.

@rudraiah: when did brahmins rule s.india that they prevented others from rising? for music, chennai music festival started in 1927. so tell me why should brahmins feel shameful for anything? Brahmins never practised discriminatin. It is only the current politicians who are diong it. Who is preventing dalits from drinking from the same cup? brahmins?The non-brahmin tamil is one of the most cowardy people i have seen. they are brave inside tn attacking a peaceful minotiy like brahmins. but they are afraid to open their mouths outside tn. infact even inside tn they are afraid to oppose christians and muslims. non-B tamils are the only ones that should be ashamed of themselves

@Sri: Brahmins are much more cleverer to rule directly, their power lies in indirectly yielding their power as chief advisers to rulers.Throughout Indian history ( may be except during muslim rule) they were in power. It is astonishing for you to say with a straight face that Brahmins never practiced discrimination, then who is Manu who created casts.
Who is preventing Dalits from drinking from the same cup-either you are totally ignorant or deliberately overlooking the universally known truth. The Dalits were called untouchables not because they were strong and special but they were considered unworthy to come in physical contact with other human beings even their shadow was not supposed to fall on Brahmins. The Dalit women were free to be abused by any one in a village, do you want me to narrate all other abuses that was sanctioned against. It is a shame you don't feel remorse or shame for all atrocities committed against fellow human being.
I hope one day Brahmins will be human enough to accept the wrong doings against their fellow humans and ask for the forgiveness from Dalits and I will guarantee they will forgive.

Dear all,

The Thread is drifting from concert in carnatic music to caste feud.
1. There have been greats from other castes and community who have been great practitioners of carnatic music. Some examples are Pudukkottai Rajamanikkam; Palani Subramaniam, Kumbakonam Rajamanikkam, Trivellore Subramaniam, Namagiripettai Krishnan, Malaikkottai Govindaswai, Sheikh Chinnamoulana, Mysore Chowdiah, etc. Were stalwarts in their own might, and was acknowledged as greats by the community who are accused of oppression. There are many more, I have put down just a few which came on the top of my head.
2. Great Composer Vedanayakam himself was from another community. Abraham Panditar is another name.
3. Many of the DIRECT disciples of the trinity, (that of atleast two of them Thyagaraja and Deekshitar) were from other caste than the so called "oppressing" caste.
4. These are some of the facts to substantiate that it is not true that deemed oppressors were not allowing others to practise this art.
5. Hence please try to be fair to all, and dont just wash dirty linen in public and try to protray unreal as real.
