Born in 1964 in Novo mesto, Slovenia, where he attended primary school and high school. In 1983 he enrolled in the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, in the Department of Slavic Studies and Philosophy, but when the Department of Philosophy was established, he re-enrolled in philosophy.

In the mid-1980s he was a contributor to and editor of the youth magazine Valj, published in Novo mesto, and in the period 1986–1988 he was head of the social affairs editorial office at Radio Student and a columnist for the weekly Mladina. Towards the end of 1988 (as a candidate for graduation) he discontinued his studies to take a permanent job with the League of Socialist Youth of Slovenia, with the task to transform the LSYS into the Liberal Party.

In 1990 he was elected a delegate to the then socio-political assembly of the post-independence National Assembly. In March 1992 he became secretary-general of the Liberal Democracy of Slovenia party, which was headed at that time by Dr Janez Drnovšek. In June 2001 he resigned from the job, and in 2002 he graduated with a thesis entitled "When philosophers fall silent – the example of Kratil". Since June 2003 he has worked as a business manager in the high-tech company Ultra.

On 6 October 2007 he was elected president of the party ZARES – New Politics. In the 2008 National Assembly elections he was elected a deputy to the National Assembly.
