Hans-Peter Blossfeld, Prof., Dr. rer pol., holds the Chair of Sociology I at Bamberg University and is the Director of the Staatsinstitut für Familienforschung an der Universität Bamberg (ifb)(State Institute for Family Research at Bamberg University ).

Blossfeld is a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina (Section 25: Economy and Empirical Social Sciences) and of the European Academy of Sociology, London. He is the chairman of the European Consortium of Sociological Research and member of the Steering Committee of the European Science Foundation Programme "Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences."

He serves on the scientific advisory board of the Zentralarchiv für Empirische Sozialforschung and the Deutsches Jugendinstitut.

Blossfeld is editor-in-chief of the European Sociological Review and the Zeitschrift für Familienforschung as well as co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Erziehungswissenschaft. He is on the editorial board of International Sociology and the scientific advisory board of the Kölner Zeitschrift für Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie and the Zeitschrift für Soziologie.

Blossfeld has published 18 books and over 130 articles on social inequality, youth, family, and educational sociology, labor market research, demography, social stratification and mobility, the modern methods of quantitative social research and statistical methods for longitudinal data analysis. He has directed several international comparative projects on demography, family, work and education, among them the Globalife project. Currently, he is interested in the flexibilization of work in modern societies, the division of domestic work in the family, and the development of individual competences and the formation of educational decisions in early school careers.
