Heinz Gärtner has been a Professor at the Austrian Institute for International Affairs (OIIP) in Vienna since 1979. His extensive work experience includes a Fulbright Professorship at the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC), Stanford University (2008); International Visitors Program, University of New Haven with participation in programs of Yale and Hartford (2005); and a Fulbright Fellowship, Research project "European Security and the Transatlantic Link," World Policy Institute, New York (2001).

Dr. Gärtner has been honoured with the Jean Monnet Module Visiting Professor at the Institute for Transborder Studies, Kwantlen University College, British Columbia, Canada, 2006; the Bruno Kreisky Award for most outstanding Political Books: "Models of European Security" (1998); and the 1998 NATO-Fellowship (together with the Austrian Institute for International Affairs).

Dr. Gärtner recently published USA: Weltmacht - was nun? Die Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik des neuen U.S. Präsidenten (USA: World Power - what now?), third updated edition, 2010 and Internationale Sicherheit - Definitionen von A-Z (International Security - Definitions), Nomos, Baden-Baden, 2008 (Zweite Auflage/Second Edition). Dr. Gärtner is also widely published on European Security, NATO and Transatlantic Relations.
