Description

Ig is marked by the Ljubljansko barje with its exceptional nature and more than 40 sites of prehistoric settlements of pile dwellers. The first remains were found on the Ljubljansko barje on July 17th 1875 and after one of the largest archaeological excavations of Dragotin Dežman the pile dwellers became a part of the national identity. Their recognisability became more intensive by the work of storyteller Janez Jalen who wrote a trilogy Bobri (The Beavers). He was a priest on Barje and was very interested in the nature and history of the area; he learnt a lot about the pile dwellers so the way of life he wrote about is based on the archaeological statements. Fortunately the trilogy Bobri was years long included in the syllabus and the connection with the pile dwellers was continued from generation to generation. This was very important in the period when the researches were not intense and the pile dwellers weren’t so present. After the independence in the 1991 the seeking of the basis of national identity became more intensive: who are we, who are our ancestors. Ig with the prison in the old castle was almost forgotten and seemed to be unimportant – it was untidy and abandoned. Even the road which led to Ig was very bad; it dissuaded the tourists to come there and know it. Nobody talked about the pile dwellers; even the inhabitants except some individuals didn’t devote them their attention.
