John NA Brown was born in 1963, in Toronto, Canada. He earned an honours bachelor degree in Cultural Anthropology at McMaster University, in 1986. After a short stay in The People's Republic of China, Mr Brown returned to McMaster for a year, graduating Summa Cum Laude in Linguistics in 1989. Brock University granted him a Bachelor of Education in 1991. Mr Brown worked as a teacher for several years, earning provincial awards for teaching technical sciences and a national award for teaching writing. At the same time, Mr Brown worked in design and graphics, winning a national award for cartooning and an international award for an animated public service announcement. While working as a 3D animator and lecturer, Mr Brown began his private research into Human Computer Interaction. This research led to an invitation to join the Human Performance Laboratory and the Institute for Biomedical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick, and then the Canadian Networks of Centres of Excellence in both the Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems (MITACS) and the Future of the Automobile (AUTO21). He earned his Master of Science with distinction; based on the Biomechanical and Performance Evaluation of the new computer input device he had invented and prototyped (Brown et al, Ergonomics Vol. 50, No. 2, 208-227). Mr Brown continued to synthesize Anthropology, Linguistics, Human Computer Interaction and Biomechanics, working with the Canadian National Research Council, the Combat Training Centre of the Canadian Armed Forces, for private industry, and for the Canadian Ministries of Transportation and of Health. He has written three encyclopedia articles, has authored or co-authored 24 professional and academic conference posters or presentations, and has been a peer reviewer for the international conferences IRMA and SIGGRAPH, where he also chaired a session in 2001. In 2011, Mr Brown became a member of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate Program in Interactive and Cognitive Environments (EMJD ICE), and moved to Klagenfurt to work with Prof Martin Hitz and his Interactive Systems Research Group.
