Prehod iz paramagnetnega v feromagnetno ali pa antiferomagnetno stanje je eden najbolj standardnih primerov zloma simetrije v kondenzirani snovi. Pod značilno temperaturo, Curijevo v primeru feromagnetov in Néelovo v primeru antiferomagnetov, se magnetni momenti uredijo vzdolž določene kristalne smeri. V nekaterih primerih antiferomagnetov pa magnetni sistem paroma ne more minimalizirati vseh interakcij – takrat govorimo o geometrijski frustraciji. Posledice geometrijske frustracije se odražajo v močnem znižanju Néelove temperature in stanju z zapleteno magnetno ureditvijo ali pa celo s stanjem, kjer se magnetni momenti ne uredijo vse do absolutne ničle. Predstavili bomo izbrana primera, kjer geometrijska frustracija igra pomembno vlogo: sistem frustriranih verig v β-TeVO4 ter kvantno spinsko tekočino na trikotni mreži 1T-TaS2 sistema.
