Stefan Kiefer graduated with a master’s degree in illustration and opened a studio as a freelance illustrator in 1983 in Hamburg along with his French partner Gilles Veron. He quickly became a well known specialist for photo-realistic illustrations. His clients were all major German ad agencies and publishing houses such as Der Spiegel, Stern magazine, Rowohlt, S. Fischer and many others. In 1991, Kiefer joined an international design team based in the Netherlands to develop a major theme park under the guidance of magician Doug Henning. Later, he became the art director of an international manufacturer of health and spa products and was in charge of all design aspects worldwide. He has been the art director of Der Spiegel's cover department since the beginning of 2000, after having joined the magazine in 1996 as a cover designer.
