Alan Turing Centenary Conference 2012 - Manchester

Alan Turing Centenary Conference Manchester, 2012

During the twentieth century, a number of thinkers - including Kurt Gödel, von Neumann, and Alan Turing - brought the breadth and depth of vision needed to make a number of key breakthroughs. This was particularly true in the areas of computational science, mathematics, physics, and developmental biology. Important accompanying developments were the building of the first computers; the subsequent use of these computers to simulate human intelligence, the use of mathematics to clarify the limitations and potential of computing machines; the engagement at theoretical and practical levels with simulating and understanding intelligent thought; the modelling of complex processes in nature which appeared to transcend mechanical computation; and the development of a better understanding of how information is created and hidden in the real world.

June 23, 2012 marks the centenary of the birth of Alan Turing. Alan Turing is arguably the most famous computer scientist of all time. The Turing Centenary Conference will be held in Manchester on June 22-25, 2012, hosted by The University in Manchester, where Turing worked in 1948-1954. The main theme of the conference is Alan Turing’s Centenary. It has the following aims:

  • to celebrate the life and research of Alan Turing;
  • to bring together the most distinguished scientists, to understand and analyse the history and development of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence;

The conference includes two special public lectures (90 minutes each), 17 lectures (60 minutes each) by invited speakers, including lectures presenting the work of Alan Turing, one dinner lecture, two panel discussions, the presentation of awards to the research competition winners and short presentations from the selected research competition winners.

In addition, the Conference includes the following events

  • a computer chess event;
  • a poster session;
  • the best paper award ceremony;
  • a competition of computer programs proving theorems.

For more information please visit the Centenary Conference website.

Comment1 Bogdan Barbu, July 12, 2012 at 2 p.m.:

I am really disappointed. The online streaming folks promised to record and make available Knuth's dinner speech; it was not streamed because they didn't have an Internet connection in that room. And the things that have been uploaded here were streamed at _terrible_ quality, because, according to them, they were using the city hall's Wi-Fi network. What a mockery.

Comment2 Davor (VL Publication Manager), July 12, 2012 at 3:02 p.m.:

@Bogdan

1) Streaming - during the live streaming we promised to record and publish all the talks that we were streaming. We kept that promise (see 32 videos above).

2) Don Knuth - it was not clear to us whether Knuth's dinner speech would be streamed or recorded by our company or not, eventhough we were prepared to do that. Eventually it was only streamed from one room to the other by another company and not for the external audience. Unfortunately the information we were given was that the talk was not recorded on any digital media.

We hope you will enjoy and immerse yourself in all the other talks.

Best,
Davor.

Hello !

What about the 'Best Paper Award Ceremony' ?

Best regards,

Sorin

Comment4 Davor (VL Publication Manager), July 18, 2012 at 3:14 p.m.:

@Sorin - the speakers at the best paper award ceremony were given prizes off the stage in front of the podium under very bad light conditions along with facing the camera with their back, that is why we decided not to publish them.

Comment5 Soren Riis, July 18, 2012 at 10 p.m.:

I participated in the event, but unfortunately I missed the talks the third day. I notice a number of talks still are locked e.g. the turing test session. I would be grateful if the locked talks will be opened.

Best regards,

Søren Riis

Comment6 Stephan, July 31, 2012 at 3:42 a.m.:

Hi Davor,

I am missing the talk given by Adi Shamir.
I liked it much and it was streamed but is not available now.

Best regards,

Stephan

Comment7 Davor (Publication Manager), July 31, 2012 at 10:28 a.m.:

Dear Stephan, as you have noticed Adi Shamir gave a brilliant talk, probably one of the most interesting ones from the perspective of a historical account of Turing's efforts during the war and the mathematical background to it. Unfortunately Mr. Shamir declined the filming and subsequent publishing of his talk, only the streaming was allowed.

best wishes,
davor

How to access the locked videos??

Comment9 Alejandro, August 3, 2012 at 2:51 p.m.:

Is it possible to download the videos somehow? Or the only way to watch them is by online streaming?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Comment10 carolblasio, August 5, 2012 at 3:36 p.m.:

How can we access the locked videos?

Comment11 Davor (Publication Manager), August 6, 2012 at 4:02 p.m.:

@ fourier94, carolblasio - the locked talks are the ones that have not confirmed the publication of the talks. We are in the process of contacting the speakers, sometimes it takes time.

@ Alejandro - at this time it is not possible to download the videos, but with new server capabilities underway we hope to make that a reality in a matter of months.

Comment12 Ramprasad Joshi, August 21, 2012 at 3:48 p.m.:

Please tell me how I can obtain all the videos of this conference. Can I get a DVD collection or something? I am ready to pay what I can. If I cannot afford, I will see if I can get some library buy the same. Please let me know also what exactly can be bought.

Comment13 Davor (Publication Manager), August 23, 2012 at 1:19 p.m.:

Dear Ramprasad, the videos are licensed under the Creative Commons license (CC BY-NC-ND) which means that it is not allowed to use this work for commercial purposes, therefore you can not buy a DVD. There is no need to ask your library to buy a subscription to Videolectures.NET as the talks are all free and available online 24/7.

Related work experience or completion of an electrical program at a college or technical institute can reduce the time required to complete your apprenticeship.
