Description

The transfer of professionals and knowledge between the countries of former Yugoslavia and former Czechoslovakia was no novelty since the beginning of 19th century. However, the usual case was transfer of Czech or Slovak experts and knowledge to Balkan countries, not the other way around. Having this in mind, it was in a way safe-to-assume that the same pattern was repeated after the Second World War. Czechoslovakia did not suffer much destruction of the industry and had good advantage in infrastructure and qualified workforce, that could have been exported to the less fortunate countries, such as Yugoslavia. However, the events of 1948 in both countries gave a twist to this story: the communication seized to exist for at least a decade, and after it was reinstated - there was a different quality to it. Besides the literature exchange and international competitions, the most interesting and peculiar collaboration is the case of Yugoslav construction companies, building for the investors from ČSSR. These buildings were seemingly easy to build, but the question is: how come Stavoprojekt was not the one building them? The aim of the presentation is to give some insight into some aspects of the dynamics of inter-block economy during the period of post-1968 'Normalization'.
