Description

Juhani Pallasmaa (b. 1936), architect, professor emeritus, has practiced architecture in collaboration with other architects, and in 1983-2012 through his own office Juhani Pallasmaa Architects. Held positions, such as Rector of the Institute of Industrial Design, Helsinki (1970-72), Director of the Museum of Finnish Architecture (1978-83), and Professor and Dean of the School of Architecture, Helsinki University of Technology (1991-79). Several visiting professorships in the USA (Yale University, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Virginia, University of Illinois, and The Catholic University in Washington, D.C.). Taught and lectured in numerous universities in Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia and Australia. Member of the Pritzker Architecture Prize Jury 2008-14.

Pallasmaa has published 60 books and 400 essays, and his writings have been translated into 35 languages. His best known books include: The Eyes of the Skin (1995 and 2012), The Thinking Hand (2012),The Embodied Image (2015), The Architecture of Image: existential space in cinema (2001).

Honorary member of SAFA, AIA and RIBA, Academician of the International Academy of Architecture. Several Finnish and international awards for architecture and writing and five Honorary Doctorates in Finland, Estonia, Romania and USA.
