Description

MELiSSA (Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative) is a project, developed by the European Space Agency to provide life support in long term space flight and in Moon and Mars bases. It aims to produce oxygen, water and food by recycling human organic waste, using the sun as an energy source. Inspired by terrestrial ecosystems, the purification process relies on the presence of plants, algae and bacteria.
