YALE RLST 145 - Introduction to the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) (Fall, 2006)

YALE RLST 145 - Introduction to the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) with Professor Christine Hayes

author: Christine Hayes, Department of Religious Studies, Yale University

This course examines the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) as an expression of the religious life and thought of ancient Israel, and a foundational document of Western civilization. A wide range of methodologies, including source criticism and the historical-critical school, tradition criticism, redaction criticism, and literary and canonical approaches are applied to the study and interpretation of the Bible. Special emphasis is placed on the Bible against the backdrop of its historical and cultural setting in the Ancient Near East.

I appreciate very much and enjoyed watching the videos of Prof. Christine Hayes. I have not come to write to her personally yet. I have used her videos and transcripts as supplement for my own course on Tanakh and LXX-NT (Prof Martin). I have been a student of Bible studies in Germany and have translated the Bible into my regional language in India, Konkani (Goa region). The NT in 1977 and LXX with parallel references to Masoretic text in 1998. Any word of thanks would fall short of my appreciation. Keeping the 'divinities' studies out it was useful for people of other religions to understand the history, literature and the genre-based content of Jewish Bible. Thank you. William

I have used these lectures to supplement my study in the old testament at university.

This series presents more than just information.. It helps me conjure up an informed and enlightened imagination which leaves me with a wow factor every time I finish listening to a lecture.

I consider it a privilege to be able to access this valuable resource and believe it could be marketed more widely for more people to experience. It is too good to keep secret.
