S prehodom v novo tisočletje se je začelo novo obdobje v znanostih o življenju. Uspelo nam je prebrati prve genome. S tem smo dobili možnost, da lahko razvozlamo fiziološke in patološke procese v živečih organizmih. Kompleksnost življenjskih procesov se skriva v organiziranosti. Čas je, da poskusimo to kompleksnost razumeti z uporabo novih orodij in pristopov. Proteini so nosilci in izvajalci velike večine molekularnih procesov. Analiza njihovih funkcij, strukture in interakcijskih mrež je ključna za razumevanje fiziologije in bolezenskih stanj in je s tem podlaga za industrijsko izrabo pridobljenih znanj.
With the turn of the millennium a new era begun for biological sciences. Whole genomes became available providing the possibility to decipher physiological and pathological processes in living organisms. The complexity of life lies in the organization and now the time has come to grasp it with the novel tools and approaches. Proteins are carriers and players in vast majority of these processes. Analysis of their function, structure and interaction networks is crucial for understanding of physiology and diseased states and provides background for industrial applications of the gained knowledge.
