Description

Major League Baseball is a multi-billion dollar per year industry that relies heavily on the quality of its schedule. Teams, fans, TV networks, and even political parties (in a way revealed in the talk) rely on the schedule for profits and enjoyment. Only recently have the computational tools of operations research been powerful enough to address the issue of finding "optimal" schedules.

People have given up solving the real-life complex shop floor predictive scheduling problem thinking doing so is mathematically impossible (scheduling is considered an NP-hard problem with no solution possible in reasonable time).

For once consider the problem can be solved and thus one always has a ready answer to the two most critical questions:

1. Considering the existing workload and whatever changes that have happened until now (delay / early activity finish, change in sequence of execution, breakdowns, etc.) when will all existing orders be over: an absolute date / time prediction?

2. Given the existing workload and conditions as of now, when will a new order be completed and how this new order impacts existing deliveries? Again an absolute date / time prediction.

You need not just imagine what a revolution such a solution can bring about instead simply download a working evaluation version and check out yourself as to how easily it can be done. Do tell your friends and colleagues as well.
