Description

There has been a revolution in open access educational information in the past three years. The problem is no longer access to information, but how to be selective with an information overload. A curated directory is a better way of selecting the best and most reliable information in both education and healthcare. Very early on, the Internet was described as a library with all of the books on the floor. If you lived next to the Library of Congress, you would have access to 30 million books. Yet, most people in their lifetime will not read more books than could be put on 5 feet of bookshelves. The problem would thus be one of selection. The same is true of the Internet. Curation, for example, can do a better job than the search engines of finding appropriate subcategories in large educational websites and the websites of professional associations. They can do a better job in recommending the audio/visual materials such as those found in open access college courses, MOOCs, iTunesU, uTubeEdu, TED lectures, and apps. Curation can include original content and aggregate a group of inter-related materials for the study of a subject. A curated directory can save a lot of time, cost and duplication and it can meet many of the needs of both global communities and an individualized program of study. Global healthcare is another major need and issue of our times. The aggregation of healthcare information into one hand selected directory is also a service to patients, students and physicians. About 55% of internet users search for medical treatment or procedure information at least once a year. Most of the best sources for healthcare information, however, are not being accessed by these users. Top20education.com and Top20health.com are examplesof such curated (hand selected), open access (free) Internet directories for education and HealthCare. These directories include all of the major high school and college to pics in education and all of the medical subspecialties in health care. They are unique in that they are designed for touch screens. As an alternative, there is a metasearch engine that includes choices for search, but also for images, videos, blogs and news. They include an app directory for each topic. There are navigation guides, which are original material. The four most highly recommended websites are starred. The better results can easily be seen by comparing the 20 recommended websites for a topic on one of these curated Top 20 websites with the recommendations for the same topic on the front page of one of the search engines
